Important voting dates

The Secretary of State upcoming elections page lists a November 3, 2026 general election. Registration deadlines below are from the State of Maine Voter Guide, which ties them to the November general election.

  • October 13, 2026: A registration sent by mail or by a third person must be received by the voter's town or city by close of business. Online registration closes at 5 p.m.
  • October 27, 2026: Registration through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
  • November 2, 2026, by noon: Deadline for UOCAVA voters under Title 21-A section 777-A who register by mail or electronically.
  • Tuesday, November 3, 2026: General Election. A person may still register in person until the close of the polls. The voter guide says voting places open between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., depending on the town, and all voting places close at 8:00 p.m.
  • Absentee ballots are available 30 days before the election at the municipal clerk's office. A request for an absentee ballot must be received 3 business days before Election Day, by close of business in the voter's town, unless special circumstances exist. In-person absentee voting in the presence of the clerk ends the Thursday before the election, unless special circumstances exist.
